4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The explosion of the move of God in the Upper Room was noised abroad and drew the attention of the people of Jerusalem. The disciples did not whisper with other tongues – I believe they were extremely loud. The term “noised abroad” in Acts 2:4-6 is the Greek word ‘phōnē’ which means voice, sound, be noised abroad or a tone. The noise from the Upper Room comprised many languages, probably the sound of a wind and other forms of chaotic noise.
The varied mixture of noises or sounds created a dissonance. In music, a dissonance is a lack of harmony among musical notes. The one hundred and twenty people in the Upper Room were supernaturally empowered to speak different languages. The seeming dissonance is seen in three areas:
1. Filling — though “they were all filled with the Holy Ghost”, they had different capacities to be filled with the Holy Ghost.
2. Speaking — “And began to speak with other tongues”. They had different reaction times.
3. Giving — “As the Spirit gave them utterance”. The Holy Ghost gives believers different gifts and gifts at different levels as He wills.
The manifestation of the Spirit and the dissonance is beautiful and serves the purpose of edification (1 Corinthians 12:7, 11). The noise forced upon the dwellers of Jerusalem was irresistible. The wind of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues is loud wind and voice. It’s reach is far. It was “noised abroad” – God disperses abroad (2 Corinthians 9:9).
Prayer: Pray for a more intimate relationship with the Holy Ghost.
