Month Theme: Charisma
Topic: The Servers
Scripture Reading: Romans 12:1-8
Main Text:
2 Kings 3:11
11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
Those with the Charisma of servanthood(Diakonia) are the “hands” of the body of Christ. They are concerned with meeting practical needs; Important needs that seem insignificant to others catch the eye and the attention of the server. A typical example of a person with this charisma of servanthood is Elisha. Elisha was described as the one “who poured water on the hands of Elijah” (2 Kings 3:11).
Pouring water on Elijah’s hands means to make the needs, the care and ministry of the man of God his priority; his main agenda. It is helping the man of God do what God has called him to do. Pouring of water requires:
- Lowliness (humility) (Philippians 2:5-12). Elisha gave up his business and his vision. He literally burned his bridges and went after Elijah and ministered unto him.
- Loyalty — It means sticking with someone through good times and bad times (Proverbs 17:17).
- Love — Elisha was more interested in being with Elijah (fellowship, mentorship) than all the places Elijah offered him. Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho and the Jordan.
For every man that goes all the way with God’s man, there are 50 standing afar off to see what is going to happen (2 Kings 2:7). Standing afar off doesn’t prove love as much as pouring water. The 50 were close enough to watch him, but Elisha was close enough to touch him. The 50 were aware of what was happening, but Elisha was a part of what was happening. The 50 were close enough to see what was going on, but Elisha was close enough to know what was going on. Have a close relationship; being close enough to know your pastor’s heart is “pouring water”.
Prayer:
Ask God for the heart of a servant.
