Month Theme: Fire

Topic: The Consuming Fire

Scripture Reading: Matthew 8:28-34

Main Text:
Matthew 8:29
29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

The Holy Ghost descended upon Jesus Christ to empower Him for His earthly ministry. The effect of the Holy Ghost on Him was like fire. The spontaneous way in which the demons were tormented in Jesus Christ’s presence is alien to many ministers and believers today (Matthew 8:28-29).

The Bible says God is a consuming fire. The word “consume” means to use up or destroy. The consuming fire of the Holy Ghost empowers believers to cast out devils. We have the consuming power (ferocity) of fire to destroy the devil, demons and demon possessed people.
1. Shock — Sudden or violent mental or emotional disturbance. The demons cried out from the possessed man (James 2:19).
2. Surrender — the questioned, “What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God?” (Matthew 8:31-32). The had to surrender.
3. Suffering — Demons suffer torment and torture. “Art thou come to torment us before the time?” Consuming fire torments, tortures, punishes, judges and gives pain to demons (Matthew 25:41).

The consuming fire does not destroy demons, principalities and power in hell in this life. Presently, believers consume or destroy demons by casting them out of the hosts they indwell and taking the territories they control from them.

Prayer: Pray that you will devour any evil establishment around you.
