Month Theme: Release

Topic: The Captain of Release

Scripture Reading: Numbers 14:1-10; Leviticus 25:8-13

Main Text:
Numbers 14:4
4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

After the exodus from Egypt the children of Israel attempted the unthinkable return to Egypt (Numbers 14:1-4). They challenged themselves to elect a leader who would lead them back to Egypt. The word “captain” in Numbers 14:4 means the head of a person, place, thing or time. The people wanted a captain who would return them to Egypt. They did not want the captain who had released them from bondage in Egypt. Some people elect leaders who will take them into bondage.

We need a captain who releases us from bondage but not one who sends us back to Egypt – sin, sickness, poverty and death.
To follow your captain of release you must conquer some bad habits and characteristics of the children of Israel.
1. CRYING
They cried profusely. They were not happy and were emotionally unstable.
2. COMPLAINING
They said bad things about good things and were impatient in waiting to enter the Promised Land.
3. CREATING
They tried to create their own solutions and leader that would return them to bondage instead of releasing them.

The Church of Jesus Christ is guilty of a similar offence. We have the tendency to follow leaders and teachers who seduce us with doctrines that demand the works of the flesh and put us under bondage. Follow captains who would release you from bondage and usher you into your jubilee (John 10:2-5, 10).

Prayer: Pray for the discernment to know who to follow.
