The word sorcery in Acts 8:9 means to be a magician or practice magical acts. To bewitch means to become astounded, insane, be beside self, wonder, throw out of position, to be out of one’s mind. Magus is a Latin word meaning astrologer, diviner or sorcerer. Simon the sorcerer was part of the church in Samaria (Acts 8:17-18).

Simon wanted to buy spiritual power to mimic the acts of the apostles. The word mimic is defined as imitating or copying in action, speech, behaviour etc. It also means to impersonate, imitate, or simulate. The mimicking spirit conjures up things, controls people and produces counterfeits of the things of the spirit of God. Simon sought to replicate what the Holy Ghost did through Peter. We have such people in the Church, who do not want to pay the price for the anointing. They mimic it and lead people astray.

The rod of Moses turned serpent swallowed the serpents of the magicians which they produced by mimicking (Exodus 7:10-12). May the fire of the Holy Ghost consume every false fire burning in our churches.

Prayer: Pray that the sorcerers and sorceresses mimicking the anointing will be exposed.
