Month Theme: Fire
Topic: It is OK to Demand
Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 1:1-10; Acts 2:1-10
Main Text:
2 Kings 1:10
10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Nehemiah demanded judgement against the Moabites for not receiving the people of Israel on their way to the Promised Land (Nehemiah 13:1-2). Believers should not shy away from commanding down fire, when there is a need to. Our motives however, should be right. James and John wanted to command fire down because they knew that Jesus Christ prescribed judgement for those who rejected and resisted His disciples (Matthew 10:14-15).
James and John knew that it was possible to command fire down upon the Samaritans (Luke 9:54-56). They exercised their faith. Their demand was declined but they demonstrated faith and audacity. It is OK to demand fire to fall.
Jesus declined the demand to bring down fire because of God’s eternal plan to save the people of Samaria but not because it was wrong to bring down fire (Matthew 10:5-6). Jesus Christ spared the Samaritans to receive the Gospel later on. But it’s not wrong to call down fire (Acts 1:8).
Prayer: Command fire to disperse any evil meeting being held against you.
