Theme: The Giving Grace
Topic: Impacting Lives – the unprivileged against the privileged
Matthew 26:11
For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
Many believers feel obliged to invest their resources and efforts in the poor and unprivileged, but not the rich and privileged. Indeed, it is our godly duty to take care of the poor. It is however, wrong to completely neglect the rich while taking care of the poor. Like Judas Iscariot, many religious people gladly or pretentiously take care of the poor but get offended when the slightest attention is given to the rich and strong amongst us (John 12:5-6).
Mary’s action of anointing Jesus’ feet was commendable, though it was not performed on a poor or weak man (Matthew 26:7, 11). We must expand our efforts to cover the strong, big and mighty people because they provide houses, vehicles and employment for the poor. If wealthy and strong people are instructed in the ways of God, they will make greater impact on people.
We should not spend all our time protesting against “the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer”. The attitude of the poor may have to change. Some are poor due to no fault of theirs but there are others whose poverty is as a result of their habits (Matthew 25:28-30). It is possible for most cases of poverty to be rectified. Prosperity is possible with the right thinking and deliberate positive actions.
