Month Theme: Holy Ghost
Topic: Deity of the Holy Ghost — The Eternal Spirit
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 9:1-14
Main Text:
Hebrews 9:14
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
The people who argue against the deity of Jesus Christ also argue against the deity of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost can only fulfil His mission on earth if He is God. His mandate is too massive for a created being or thing. There are four main divine attributes that distinguish God from created beings and the Holy Ghost has all of them. The first is that He is the Eternal Spirit.
The Holy Ghost must be eternal to empower the Church to fulfil the eternal counsel of God. The Holy Ghost has oversight over the activities of humankind in every dispensation. The writer of the book of Hebrews refers to Him as “the eternal spirit” (Hebrews 9:13-14). At the new birth in Christ, believers are regenerated through the activity of the Word of God and the Holy Ghost. To give eternal life to believers, the Holy Ghost must be eternal. A spirit that is not eternal cannot give eternal life to human beings.
The Holy Ghost is God’s means of empowerment for believers to overcome trials so that they can receive the blessings God has laid in store for them eternally (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). The Holy Ghost must be eternal to deliver to us the eternal things of God, which are not seen.
Prayer: Thank God that He has given us eternal life.
