Month Theme: Fire
Topic: Assault on the Preacher
Scripture Reading: Acts 7:50-60
Main Text:
Acts 4:19
19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
The disciples could not stop preaching the Word of God because the Holy Ghost empowered them to overcome the opposition they faced. Fiery messages from fiery preachers lead to either repentance or persecution. Stephen’s audience preferred persecuting him to repentance. Stephen’s message to his hard-hearted audience was fiery but it produced indignation in them (Acts 7:50-60).
The persecutors were engrossed in wicked attempts to destroy the preacher who would not leave them alone.
• Anger — our presence and our words anger them (Acts 7:54-57). They hate to see us exist.
• Assault — Intimidation (advance towards you), rejection (being thrown out), physical attack (they stoned him) (Acts 7:57-58).
• Accusation — Stephen was killed because he was accused (Acts 7:58). Many believers have been destroyed, and many others suffering because of false accusations leveled against them.
Jesus Christ assured His disciples that He would build His Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). No matter how strong the opposition is, we will not be overwhelmed.
Prayer: Pray for fire in you to keep moving in the face of opposition.
