Month Theme: Holy Ghost

Topic: Looking at Eternal Things — Rest and Reward

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:1-18; Acts 2:1-10

Main Text:
2 Corinthians 4:18
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

In yesterday’s devotional, we looked at one of the eternal things the Lord shows us, which is “removal”. The other two which we will look at are “rest” and “reward”. Believers in Christ go through many tribulations and challenges. We resist the devil, sin and death through the power of the eternal Spirit. The Holy Ghost is God’s means of empowerment for believers to overcome trials so that they can receive the blessings God has laid in store for them eternally (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

Understanding the eternity of the Holy Spirit gives us the boldness to face trials, temptations and death, and to focus on the things that are not seen. (1 Corinthians 2:9-12). The trials can sometimes be so severe that rest and reward become unimaginable. We can only see the rest and reward that is coming by the Spirit (Hebrews 4:6-9).

The early disciples could see eternal rest and reward, though the prevailing conditions showed otherwise — they saw it by the Spirit (Hebrews 10:34-35). We must believe God to see beyond the temporal things, and see that which is eternal.

Prayer: Ask the Holy Ghost to open your eyes to see beyond temporal things.
