Acts 8:18
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

The word “sorcery” in Acts 8:9 means to be a magician or practice magical acts. To be bewitched means to become astounded, insane, be beside one’s self, wonder, throw out of position, to be out of one’s mind. “Magus” is a Latin word meaning astrologer, diviner or sorcerer. The spirit of sorcery in Simon had three assignments:
• Monitoring • Monetisation • Mimicking
We looked at “monitoring” in the previous devotional. Today we will consider “monetisation”.

Monetisation is the action or process of earning revenue from an asset or business. Simon Magus must have had a lot of money – city-wide money. He controlled the entire city of Samaria and possibly the new believers in Samaria (Acts 8:8-11). Simon Magus tried to tempt Peter to monetise the power of the Holy Ghost but failed (Acts 8:18-19). The monetisation spirit has the money and knows the value of spiritual power. Sorcerers have and know what many Spirit-filled believers don’t have and know (Luke 16:8-9).

Sorcerers and sorceresses within and outside the church use money to control churches and even pastors. Simon tried to manipulate Peter. We must grow spiritually enough to know and value spiritual things, and make a collective effort to defeat the monetisation spirit in the church.

Prayer: Pray and command the money of sorcerers and sorceresses around you to perish with them.
