Month Theme: Fire

Topic: The Right to Command Fire

Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 1:1-10; Acts 2:1-10

Main Text:
2 Kings 1:10
10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

The apostles James and John attempted to follow the footsteps of the prophet Elijah by asking Jesus Christ for permission to bring down fire upon the people of Samaria (Luke 9:52-54). The spirit of Elijah is associated with fire. He commanded fire to fall on the captains and soldiers of King Ahaziah (2 Kings 1:9-10).

The apostles James and John had good reasons to want to bring down fire. The offence of the people of Samaria is two-fold:
• Rejection — The people of Samaria rejected the disciples of Jesus Christ.
• Resistance — The people of Samaria resisted the disciples of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ demanded that His disciples be well received and regarded (Matthew 10:7-11).

James and John wanted to command fire down because they knew that Jesus Christ prescribed judgement for those who rejected and resisted His disciples (Matthew 10:14-15). Nehemiah demanded judgement against the Moabites for not receiving the people of Israel on their way to the Promised Land (Nehemiah 13:1-2). Believers should not shy away from commanding down fire, when there is a need to. Our motives however, should be right.

Prayer: Pray and command fire to intercept any evil agenda against you.
